Fall has finally landed… temps in the mid to high 50’s daytime… dipping into the 40’s at night… almost time to bring in the lemon tree… growing taller and wider his year… the gardenia… bushier and taller than before… making space in the front foyer… a challenge for Tuesday before temps drop into the 30’s in the coming days 🍁 🍂 

Breakfast indoors… iced coffee🧋… hubs… hot java ☕️ mini turkey wraps for two please… Mr Sam outside on the deck… snuggled into his favorite box 📦 paws over his nose to keep the chill at bay… crunching over fallen leaves…  walking over to pet his head…  making sure he isn’t too chilly…  he certainly prefers the outdoors 

Laundry day… so exciting ~not~  interspersed with calls 📞 bill paying  😩  making the best of a day of chores…  hubs in his workshop designing some new creation 🤷🏼‍♀️ glad he is enjoying the process

Rainy early morning…  midday clouds… afternoon sun… just in time for trick or treaters… arriving in packs of six to eight… parents in tow… little hands holding out pumpkin buckets for a treat…  excitement over each piece of candy…  eyes bright… big smiles… such a joy to see their happy little faces 🙃

Iced coffee🧋couple of eggs on buttered toast for the hubs along with his hot java ☕️ then off to hydroponics…testing the pH… adding nutrients… 

On candy patrol 🍫 each child identifying their costume in adorable little voices… stretching  out their buckets and bags for a treat… Mr Sam hiding in the greenhouse… ghouls and goblins too scary for him 😽 couple of older kids dressed up as t-rex 🦖🤣 

By nightfall it was over… time to cook

Supper tonite… fresh bluefish 🐟 in soy sauce, mirin and lime juice with ginger, garlic and onion… delicious… brown rice 🍚 served alongside as well as a crisp green salad with avocado 🥑 and lime vinaigrette… Dessert… one Reese’s for the hubs… a Milky Way mini for yours truly… after all… it’s Halloween 🎃 👻

The main event… that annoying neighbor… grilled… sliced and served… rare… bahahahahahaha 🦹‍♀️

Breakfast on the deck… light sweatshirt… hot tea 🫖 for two… mini wraps to go… the hubs in his workshop… off to the market… trying out a new spot.  Ever heard of Lidl?  Headquartered in Germany with discount food stores throughout the EU…  opening in the past couple of years in NYC 🏪

Not certain what to expect…  pleasantly surprised… lots of produce… many choices… everything clean, bright, very fresh…  refrigerated cases spotless… no off scents… meat, poultry and fish sections well stocked…  bakery fresh with pleasing aromas… grocery aisles well lit with major brands as well as Lidl’s own… but the BIG surprise were the prices… significantly less expensive than any grocer in the area… enough to make the 20 minute drive well worth it… for those of you in the area… check out Lidl’s… highly recommend 👍🏼👍🏼

Supper tonite… leftovers… for the hubs Winter White Bean & Sausage Soup…  yours truly enjoying remaining rotini and meatballs… a bright fresh salad alongside to lighten up the meal as well as two fabulous whole wheat rolls from Lidl’s… crusty… perfect accompaniment to soup 🥣 

Stopped off at Mom’s for a surprise pop in… brought her some ground turkey from the market… chatted briefly… then off to prepare supper 🍝🥗

Supper tonite… rotini with fresh marinara… roasted meatballs…  Parmesan cheese… with a side of ricotta…  quick and satisfying after the storm 😋

A game changer… in a show of compassion… US drug maker… Merck… will… during the pandemic… permit drugmakers in poor countries worldwide to produce its antiviral covid pill reducing severe disease and hospitalizations by 50% in adults…  this pill 💊 needing no refrigeration…  could save millions of lives around the world 🌎

Rain… clouds… cool temps… more rain… bah 😒 our first nor’easter of the season… so far 4” of rain in the bucket… tonite the winds arrive… gusts up to 45 mph… lots of howling and moaning…  gale blasting down the avenue… house groaning against the onslaught…  birds… squirrels… all hiding from the storm ☔️⛈ 💨 

Breakfast inside… iced coffee🧋toasted multigrain seeded bread with swiss… the hubs… hot java ☕️ with the last of the scones…  paperwork day 😩 the hubs in his workshop 🔨🪛 hubs off to PT late afternoon during a break in the storm… zooming off to the market meanwhile for a quick shop… by pick up time raining heavily once again… car splashing through widening puddles… glad to be indoors once again 🚘 

Supper tonite… hunters casserole… a venison based shepherds pie… perfect for a stormy night… ground venison browned with onion, garlic, salt, pepper, dry mustard powder, Worcestershire sauce and a splash of wine 🍷 once cooked through adding in frozen peas and corn… off the heat tossing together… spread in a 10” Pyrex and topped with luscious mashed potatoes mixed with salt, pepper, butter and sour cream… yum… baked at 400°F for about 30 minutes until the top began to brown at the tips… so comforting  and delicious… though not very photogenic 🤣  Dessert… orange 🍊 segments and tea 🫖

A rare warm fall day here in the Big Apple 🍎  72°F… a bit humid… warmth before the big nor’easter begins tonite…  squirrels 🐿 out… munching acorns 🌰 digging in the lawn…  stocking up for winter…  birds quieter today… animals sensing a change in the atmosphere ⛈ 

Breakfast on the deck… iced coffee🧋toasted english muffin with münster cheese… the hubs hot java ☕️ accompanying oatmeal adorned with blueberries and banana… Mr Sam pacing the deck… meowing… apparently feeling the advancing storm ☔️ 

Prepping for the winds 💨 to come… pulled and trimmed leeks… ready for vichyssoise to be made in the coming days… planted the spearmint, dianthis and marigolds in the ground… trimmed off the last of the green peppers 🫑 and tomatoes 🍅 collected all the washed pots, stakes… secured the small tables and placed all inside the greenhouse… stacked the deck chairs 🪑 storm ready!!

Supper tonite…  meatless Monday… composed salad… jammy eggs… chick peas… cucumber from the garden… tomato… roasted beets… mushrooms… avocado… kalamata olives… french breakfast radishes from the garden…  jalapeño jack cubes… sharp cheddar cubes… mixed greens… all splashed with lime juice… homemade caesar dressing for dipping… toasted rye bread schmeared with avocado and topped with sardines 😋

The blustery days of autumn… chilly afternoon… bright blue skies… few puffy clouds…  temps in the mid 60’s…  morphing into light drizzle as evening approaches… squirrel trying to nibble a remaining baby cucumber… spiny exterior is quite off putting… even for their leathery mouths… one bite was not well tolerated 🤣 serves the little thief right 😂  

On the deck… Radishes almost ready… leeks too… loads of pea shoots for salads… too cool for peas to set… greenhouse… empty of plants… cleaned and prepped for winter storage… thyme… rosemary… parsley… once temps drop… into the warmed greenhouse they go 

Breakfast in the greenhouse… sitting on the bench… hot tea 🫖 toasted english muffin and münster…  scone and hot coffee ☕️ for the hubs…  Mr Sam snuggled in his box 📦 enjoying the warmth of the sun ☀️ without the breeze 💨 

Spending the day organizing old photos… bringing back forgotten memories… the hubs out in his shop tuning up the snow blower… reglazing windows… readying for the snow ❄️ and cold 🥶 

Supper tonite… with my cooking assistant… Mr Sam… Winter White Bean and Sausage Soup with bok choy 🥬 red and white beans… grated new potatoes 🥔 and spicy sausage… served with oyster crackers and a bit of sour cream to diminish the heat 🥵 a bit… Tention Tamer tea 🍵 and chocolate for the hubs… scone and tea 🫖 for yours truly

A day of decluttering…  sorting through the many storage areas… finding goodies to rehome…  junk to dispose…  photos to organize…  unfortunately… as Mom said… no jewels 💎 or cash 💰 😂  Loving our buy nothing local group…. giving me joy to see the faces of folks excited to pick up our unneeded items and put them to fresh use 🙃😁

Family supper tonite… Mark & Andrea… Danicha & Eduardo… a BBQ on the deck…  cheese and parsley sausage ring appetizer…  london broil (rare please) pasta salad with peas, corn, roasted tomatoes, Kalamata olives, queso de frier, black beans and mustard vinaigrette… crisp green salad…  Noble Vines 337 Cabernet 🍷(named for the vine roots brought over from Bordeaux) dessert…  tiramisu from our local patisserie… espresso and coffee

While at the market… hubs cleaned the upstairs bathroom… vacuumed the whole house… washed the kitchen floor… did a wash 🧺  Such a noble guy 👨🏻‍🔧🥰

Another sunny day… humidity inching up again…  squirrels busily digging little round holes… burying acorns… the ultimate preppers…  geese forming flocks… practicing for their long migration… 

Breakfast out on the deck… iced coffee🧋toasted buttered english muffin… the hubs omelette and jerky alongside his hot java ☕️ Mr Sam out on the warm boards… practicing his loaf… paws tucked… tail curled… eyes closed… enjoying the sunshine ☀️ 

On cricket patrol in the greenhouse… the little buggers munching leaves on pepper and tomato plants… luckily they don’t eat any of the fruit… a nuisance regardless… at end of season will be stripping out all the plants… power washing down the deck and greenhouse interior… removing debris… prepping for the persephone phase… without insect inhabitants…  once cleaned rosemary, thyme, lemon tree and gardenia will grace the inside until winter arrives…  then lemon tree and gardenia live in the front vestibule until spring 💐 

Girls night… quiche, salad and wine for supper… the hubs and friends off to see the new Bond movie…  a chance to relax… giggle… and just chat… delightful 🥰

Breakfast out on the deck… multi grain seeded toast with homemade marmalade… iced coffee🧋the hubs blood draw postponing his hot cup ☕️ and mini wrap alongside a dish of cottage cheese till noontime… Mr Sam eyeing our coffee… he does love a taste of milk 🥛 no go…  it doesn’t agree with his tummy…  brought him a couple of greenies instead 😸

Popped in on Mom late afternoon…  just returning from her bridge game… sporting a brand new hearing aid… she was perky and happy to be able to hear our chat better… so glad 😃 Coming home to water the greenhouse and deck plantings… rosemary flowers so teeny… their little blue faces bright in the sun ☀️ 

Supper tonite… composed salad of avocado 🥑 celery… greenhouse tomato 🍅 sliced pickles and fresh figs from our neighbors tree drizzled with balsamic on a bed of romaine leaves 🥬 alongside tuna salad with red onion and chopped celery in dijonaise sauce 😋 and a toasted NY bagel 🥯

Market day for us & Mom… finding blueberries 🫐 the size of nickels… great buys on ground turkey 🦃 a bunch of 5 lb bags of produce for $2 on the quick sale shelves… small red skin potatoes 🥔 bok choy 🥬 romaine lettuce… tomatoes 🍅  cauliflower and broccoli 🥦 making the budget work! 

Popped over to Moms for an early evening visit… dropping off her goodies… Mark & Andrea joining us…  giving Grandma the big news…  they got married… pandemic style… a small group with an officiant… party to be scheduled when we can all gather safely… Grandma thrilled to hear the big news 🗞 smiling ear to ear to see her grandson happily hitched 🥰

Left Moms a bit late… stopped off for pizza at the local spot… NY pizza… a delicious treat… quick and tasty… perfect choice 🍕 

Last nights supper…. Tagliatelle with fresh tomatoes… kalamata olives… romano cheese… red pepper flake and a bit of red wine… the hubs adding sautéed ground beef to his plate…

Dreary grey day…  mist… drizzle… rain… heavy clouds…  sun sleeping in today… squirrels staying in their nests… birds hopping about splashing in puddles… humidity over 85%… great day for staying indoors

Late breakfast… iced coffee🧋hubs ate the last banana with his morning cottage cheese and berries…  not hungry enough for toast… spent the day doing paperwork… Mr Sam snoozing on the living room floor… one eye 👁 open… watching any movements…  the hubs in his workshop… few minor repairs… supervising his hydroponics… lettuce 🥬 and basil 🌿 doing well 

Supper tonite… roasted kielbasa… crisp green salad with feta… roasted beets… kalamata olives… greenhouse cucumber 🥒 baby kumatoes 🍅 avocado 🥑 with homemade creamy caesar dressing…  a glass of Cabernet alongside 🍷 

Dessert… another slice of Chocolate Cherry Bread… so delicious 😋 Wild Berry Zinger tea for the hubs 🫖

Sun trying to peek her bright face through clouds today… some success early on… late afternoon she lost the battle… humidity rising… feeling rain approaching…  watching a lone pigeon sitting on the light pole…  observing from on high…  finally flying south to join her flock… 

Iced coffee🧋toast with homemade marmalade out on the deck… the hubs early cottage cheese already gone… mini turkey wrap… an orange… hot coffee ☕️ green apple 🍏 string cheese… hubs nibbling through the day… 

Visiting Mom… popping in unannounced…  so pleased 😃 to have company… spent over an hour hanging with her… just chatting…   looking happy… stable… enjoying her latest book… looking forward to playing bridge tomorrow 🃏 

The hubs out in the garage… installing shelving… organizing his workspace… glad to see him busy setting up… finally coming in for supper as the skies darkened 🧹📐🔨🪚

Supper tonite… mixed salad bowl… romaine… leaf lettuce… greenhouse tomato 🍅 greenhouse cucumber 🥒 chick peas… avocado 🥑 Kalamata olives… feta cheese… roasted cauliflower… roasted beets… sour cream Bleu cheese dressing alongside… so delicious… perfect on a warm humid evening 🥗 

Our dear friend Mariya made Paul Hollywood’s Chocolate Cherry Bread… the recipe makes two loaves… she gave us one… the MOST delicious bread we have ever tasted… decadent… needs so adornments…  such a kind and generous thing to do… thank you so Mariya ❤️❤️

Enjoying stunning fall weather… temps about 75°F… crisp cool breeze… bright sunshine…  perfect for gardening… fall clean up… weeding… trimming… feeding bushes… prepping for winter 🥶 ❄️ 

Breakfast out on the deck… iced coffee🧋& toast with homemade marmalade… hubs enjoying cottage cheese and green tea 🍵 two hours later… mini turkey wrap with his hot java ☕️ couple hours pass… apple 🍏

and cheese stick…  grazing through the day 

Mr Sam stretched out on the warm boards… lounging in the sun for a bit… then snugged under a chair in a cardboard box snoozing 💤 while we weed… the hubs creating a beautiful walkway in the herb garden 🪴 

Supper tonite… beef stew 2.0 🥘 adding in another pound of sautéed shrooms… a bit more veggie stock… rubbed thyme… lemon juice for additional acid… and arugula… delicious 😋 ice cream for dessert 🍨 

Thursday night Mark, our son, went fishing with clients… caught bluefish and striped bass… super fresh… striped bass for supper on Friday with marjoram and lemon… tater tots (fish ‘n chips?) fish was moist… scrumptious… made tomatoes with olives and basil alongside 😋
